We Made History: Preston’s First-Ever Trans Rights Protest

Updated: Apr 29

On Saturday, 27th April 2025, something incredible happened in Preston.

Over 150 people gathered outside Preston Bus Station to rally for trans rights - marking what evidence suggests is Preston’s first-ever trans rights protest. At a time when our rights are under sustained attack, Preston stood up and made history.

We came together in the heart of our city to send a clear message: trans people belong here. We are part of this community, part of its past, present, and future. And we will not be erased.

The protest was peaceful, powerful, and full of determination. Together with the support of trade unions, community groups, activists, and allies, we showed that solidarity can never be broken. Pride, resistance, and hope carried us through every word spoken and every voice raised.

Our protest was part of a wave of action happening across the UK following the Supreme Court ruling that threatens the dignity and legal recognition of trans people. Preston stood proudly alongside cities like Manchester, Leeds, Cardiff, Sheffield, and Bristol - and we were supported by voices from around the world.

We also proudly stood in solidarity with our trade union siblings, recognising Workers’ Memorial Day and affirming that the fight for workers’ rights and trans rights are deeply connected. A just society must be one where every worker, every person, is treated with dignity and respect.

Why This Moment Matters

This protest wasn’t just a reaction.

It was a declaration: that Preston's LGBTQ+ community is vibrant, resilient, and here to stay.

It was a reminder that when we come together, we can change the course of history.

It was a commitment - that we will not allow prejudice, political scapegoating, or legal injustices to go unchallenged.

The success of this rally shows that even in places where there has never been a major trans rights demonstration before, people are ready to stand up and fight for what’s right.

What’s Next?

The energy we built together will not be lost. This is only the beginning.

We will continue to organise, educate, resist, and build a future where trans people can live freely and proudly - in Preston, across Lancashire, and beyond.

We encourage everyone who attended, and everyone who wishes they had, to stay involved, stay loud, and stay proud.

History was made. Now, history is ours to shape.

Thank you, Preston.
